We’re often asked if floating vinyl plank (click‑lock) floors are safe after a leak because the top is “waterproof.” These photos show the reality: water travels under the planks and gets trapped on the underlayment or slab—even when the surface looks fine.
Why this happens
- Click‑lock seams and wall edges let water run laterally.
- The vinyl top is impermeable, so moisture can’t evaporate upward.
- Underlayment/vapor barriers can hold standing water.
- Trapped moisture risks odor, microbial growth, and subfloor damage.
What it usually means
- Lift/remove affected planks, dry the subfloor and wall bases, then reinstall/replace as needed.
- Validate with moisture readings—not just a “looks dry” check.
